With

about Abarth taking the 124 rallying, one might as well enjoy an impression of what might be coming. Behold the ‘124 Abarth Spider’ ... in Europe, the standard Fiat 124 Spider gets 140 hp and 240 Nm to play with.
Considering it shares the engine with the Abarth 500, it might see an output of 160 hp or 190 hp easily.

My hopes were dashed when the IDX was cancelled but I could go for this!

Well, if it holds true and Abarth take the little Fiat rallying and possibly into WRC territory (maybe not with the 124, but who knows), chances of seeing this don’t seem that bad all of a sudden.
They have most of the stuff already, so why not please the public? :D

As would I ... the standard car just fell flat on its belly for me when it comes to purely aesthetic appeal; this, though, I can somehow like a whole lot. The wheels and stance must have something to do with it. ;)

The early 00s called and they want their black hood and trunk lids back

While I must allow that burn, I wish to point to the 500 Abarth sporting a very similar color scheme. It’s just their thing, I guess.

I think it's an Abarth thing. That's just the first thing that popped into my head.

I guess the exhaust is the only difference. Thats pretty sexy, even if they didn’t make it you could upgrade some things and do the graphics and emblem from a 500 yourself. Needs a hatchback or hard top kit like an S2000.

That work stance makes me cringe now!

Throwback to the original 124 Abarth just like the rest of the little details are throwbacks to the original 124

I’m trying to convince myself that would work as my only car. An Abarth would make that easier.

Its the body kit and the paint that does it for me. would have to re-tune and put in a bigger turbo and go for 300RWHP.then the real shenanigans begin

The question is, how long are we going to have to wait for the Abarth version to come out, since that’s the one we’re all really waiting for? Come to think of it, Fiat Chrysler hasn’t actually announced a hard on sale date for the normal Classica and Lusso models yet, have they?

I’m going through the same thing. A fabric roof in the Northeast and only two seats aren’t really ideal for me, but, if the Abarth version was really compelling and priced well, I might have to forget about those minor issues.

Yeah, but on a modern car it just takes me back to the F&F days.

I regret using it already, don’t make me feel bad! D:
Something about this car spoke to me when the normal 124 did not. “Stance” was merely the an ill-conceived shortcut for “the wheels look neatly tucked in and match the sportive character of the overall bodykit-enhanced exterior rather well”, I guess.

With the engine being virtually identical to the one used in several cars across Europe’s Fiat lineup, parts swapping should indeed be a picnic, as should be extracting quite a bit (>200hp) more power from the 1.4T.
You say hardtop ... remember that this is the Miata’s twin, so it should be plenty stiff enough in the twisties. I’ll still agree, hardtops feel better, even if fabric tops have come a long way.

Two words: hard top. Even if Fiat themselves won’t offer it, I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to get something for it, it being a Miata clone.
Also, if you get a small and relatively frugal summer car, you could still make the case for a dedicated winter beater/ocassion transporter.

The 500 Abarth will happily churn out a few more horses on stock machinery if you speak to it nicely ... and so might this, even if they make no actual 124 Abarth Spider EsseEsse. ;)
Oh, with it being a small car, expendables are pretty cheap, right?

300 horsies from that 1.4? I’ve seen something along the lines of 220-240 hp tunes on 500s, IIRC, no idea what a reasonable ceiling for these is.
For a bit more, you might want to throw Mazda’s 2.5T in there. In the CX-9, that puts out 250 hp and 420 Nm with presumably lots to spare.

Keep in mind this is but a humble rendering of an Italian car news site.
That said, the stock engine will be that 1.4T they use in many cars, so you’re primed to kick up the power a notch.
Fingers crossed they come through and make it, though.

Since my second car, which does seat six and have a big trunk, is over 30 years old, this would be my everyday beater/winter car.
Right now, the likely option is to just load up a V6 Mustang as much as I can and then have a custom interior done, since I do prefer a coupe and do like having the extra two occasional seats, but, if the 124 gets into showrooms in the next 5 months and the Abarth is really good, I might just have to learn to live with a roadster.

well, it s a fiat motor, its not like i’m aiming for reliability to start with.
